Props can be an important part of a brand session. Props help tell the story of who you are, what you
do and how you help your clients. Here are some key things to think about when you are deciding what
to use for your brand session.
Here are 7 questions to ask yourself to help determine which props will be most impactful for your brand session.
1. WHAT ITEMS DO YOU USE WHILE DOING YOUR JOB?
Common items many businesses use especially for any sort of office setting: computer, phone, office supplies, coffee mug, pen, planner. Then depending on your business, there are often more specialized props you can work into your photos.
For example, a hair stylist, could use a brush, scissors, blowdryer, curling iron, products to dye hair etc.
A florist might use scissors, ribbons, vases, flowers, tissue paper etc.
Think about the items that you use in your every day work process.
2. WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU SELL?
If you sell products in your business, you can use a branding session to showcase those items. Think about the items you most want to post about or put out there for your consumers to see.
3. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SNACK OR DRINK?
Incorporating things that YOU like in your brand photos allows your audience to get to know YOU. You are your businesses most important asset. When people feel like they know you, they are more likely to become a client and use your services as they have a comfort with you.
Think about things you could use or hold in photos that speak to what you like. Think things like coffee, tea, wine, soda or your favorite salty or sweet snack.
4. DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE?
Celebration photos are great to have on hand when you need them. You can include items that you eat or drink such as champagne or a cupcake with a candle. Or it could be something such as balloons, confetti (depending on where you are shooting), a party hat or party decorations. Get creative!
5. DO YOU WORK WITH PEOPLE?
If your job is working with people, people can make great “props”. You can include coworkers or have people stand in as clients. These can be actual clients or friends or models posing as clients.
6. WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
Accessories can be great props. These could be items you wear or hold. Think hats, bags, sunglasses, scarfs, jewelry. Pick items that speak to you and your style or brand. This can be great way to work in brand colors. Having good accessories can add variety to your outfits and photos.
7. WHAT’S COMING UP IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS?
Are there any specific holidays you will need a photo for a post? If so, bring something themed to that holiday.
Do you have travel you will announce or speak about? You could bring luggage, a passport, or travel accessory.
Do you have a specific launch? Bring the item or something related to it so you have photos to announce the launch.
Try and think ahead to what is on the horizon and bring props appropriate to those events.
